Beauty Blunders: Choosing the Wrong Concealer
Sunday, August 2, 2009 9:47A great concealer can hide a multitude of skin sins. But many women try to take a make-up shortcut by using concealer lighter than their own skin tone to hide particularly stubborn complexion problems. It may seem logical to use an extra light concealer to mask under-eye circles or dark blotchy skin, but the results can be worse than the original problem. That doesn’t mean being stuck with raccoon eyes or uneven tone, but it requires taking a different approach.
For under-eye circles, find a concealer with a yellow-based hue. It shouldn’t be darker or lighter than the overall complexion. Yellow helps neutralize the purple/blue undertones under eyes. Apply the concealer very lightly and blend thoroughly. If more concealer is necessary, apply each layer lightly and blend completely before applying the next.
Blotchy skin and acne blemishes require a similar method, but in the case of undesirable redness look for a concealer with a green undertone. This compensates for the redness. Many cosmetic lines offer green-toned concealers for exactly this purpose. Once again, the product should match the lightness or darkness of the user’s own skin tone closely.
And try before buying. Don’t rely on packaging or drug store wrist-tests to be sure the product will provide coverage. Have the product demonstrated on the problem areas themselves with a visit to the makeup counter.
